Go video DVD VR5940 ejects disk with read error now repaired.

Hi Humphrey

Need repair advice to fix a Go Video VR5940. DVD laser head moves in/out, up/down, red light briefly on, disk begins to spin slow, then stops and ejects DVD, displays C02. Also, there’s a tiny red light lit up on PCB at D301. Thank you.

For your DVD with problems you highlighted, here is my take.

First how did the problem start? Sometimes if you load two disks by mistake and close the drawer, then the disk table will be pressed down and this will affect the disk height and the error of disk being ejected can occur….

Also if drawer belts are worn or oily can cause this problem. Or could just be broken gear teeth or stripped gear.

This problem sound mechanical and therefore you should concentrate on the drawer mechanism and pickup mechanism Jack

The drawer belts are both loose and greasy with a good bit of dust on loader cam mechanism so since I can’t get Go Video parts any more, I'll clean and try DVD again. However, the spindle motor in this DVD is not the type in your book. This motor is a BLDC using PWM and Hall Effect feedback and is connected to loader PCB with a 13-pin ribbon cable. How do you bench test the BLDC motor? Any thoughts on the tiny red LED on D301 of the supply board? Thanks again!

Hi Jack,

The spindle motor was not a suspect; I only suspected the height which could have caused the symptoms you said.

The main suspect now is the rubber belts and the oily belt as you rightly put it.

So just replace or clean up that belt and see if it will solve the problem.

I wish I had your confidence that the problem was the loader mechanism! I can't understand how a slipping loader belt would even allow the laser head to traverse into the center of the disc, then briefly turn on the spindle motor, then stop and fully eject the disc. However, I'll do what you recommend and let you know the result. Thanks.

Hi Jack.

I think the laser is okay, this going up and down fast means it is trying to focus.

So the main suspect now is the CD table height.

If too low you will it making noise as it touches disk bed.

I repaired the DVD by replacing the laser head and now the laser beam is bright enough to be visible from the top side of the disk (see photo attached). I appreciate your help and feedback. Thank you.

The photo was taken inside building with a ceiling light and table lamp both turned on (60-watt bulbs each). The camera was iPhone 4S with flash disabled. Thanks again!

Oh I see, I have never considered looking at the laser light with the disk on place but I tried it after this case and indeed confirmed it possible though the DVD I used was very faint than yours.
